Definition Essay Coffee Coffee is a dark brown/black naturally caffeinated drink made from passing water through ground roasted coffee beans. Coffee is used as a great medicine to help patients, and it can be taken as a popular drink all over the world. Caffeinated coffee drinks are largely consumed by people around the world regularly. It has become an internationally popular drink in almost every country. Coffee is so important to our daily lives that some people cannot live a day without drinking it. The word coffee was derived from the Ottoman Turkish kahve, via the Italian caffe.The Turkish word was derived from the Arabian word qahwah. Arab lexicographers report that qahawah originally referred to wine. Since this beverage was thought to dull one’s hunger the word, qaha which signifies â€Å"to have no appetite† was given to it. Other etymologies also indicate that the Arab form was a loanword from an Ethiopian source word Kaffe, which refers to the highland in th e southwestern Ethiopia where the plant grows indigenous. However, the word that is used in that area is bunn, the native Shoa name bun meaning a native plant.Today coffee has different names all over the world, like caffe in French, Kaffee in Germany, kahvi in Finland etc. No matter what it is called, the Ethiopian people were the first to recognize the stimulating effect of the coffee beans that grow as a coffee plant. No one knows who among the natives earlier than 17th century grew coffee in Africa or used it as a stimulant. It is believed that a 9th century goat herder discovered coffee, but that his discovery was not revealed until 1671. Another story holds that Sheik Omar discovered the coffee.It is said that he was exiled from Mocha, Arab to a desert cave near Ousab, Arab. He was starving, so he chewed local berries, but found them bitter. To get a better taste, he roasted tem. But, they were too hard to eat. He then boiled them to soften the roasted beans, which resulted in a brown liquid with a strong fragrance. After drinking the liquid, he sustained himself on it for days. As this story reached Mocha, Omar was asked to return home. Coffee was brought from Ethiopia to Arab. Sufi Baba Budan smuggled coffee from Yeman to India. He smuggled beans by strapping them on to his chest.The first smuggled plant was grown at Mysore, India. Coffee drinking then spread to Europe and America. In the United States, September 29 is celebrated as National Coffee day. Coffee is grown in tropical grassland mixed with patches of forest at the altitude of 16-24 degrees. It is grown in different types of soil. But, it is especially grown in volcanic soil. Coffee is produced in a large quantity in rainy season. It is grown in a slope less than fifteen percent. It is not cultivated in a steeper slope because it presents major erosion risk and requires terracing and special management such as counter furrows.Coffee comes from topical African shrubs or trees of genus coffea, which is widely cultivated in the tropics. These beans picked at peak ripen, then dried, roasted and grounded to prepare a stimulating aromatic drink. Coffee is a brewed beverage with a distinct aroma and flavor. The beans are found in coffee â€Å"berries†, which grows on tree. Coffee is one of the most traded agricultural commodities in the world. Coffee is slightly acidic (5. 0-5. 1 pH) and can have stimulating effect on humans because of its caffeine content. It is one of the most consumed beverages in the world.All the coffee plants are classified in the large family rubiaceae. Different species of coffee are cultivated all over the world, among which the two main commercially cultivated coffee plants are coffea canephora, mostly known as robusta, and coffea arabic, arabica, which is the most highly regarded species and which is the native of southwestern highlands of Ethiopia. Coffees are evergreen plants which may grow up to five meter tall. The flowers of coffee plan ts are auxiliary. Flowers bloom simultaneously and are followed by oval berries.The berries are green when immature; they ripen to yellow then red and black on drying on the bush. Black berries produce the best tasting coffee. The berries usually contain two seeds, but some contain only one. These coffee berries are called pea berries. They take five to nine month to ripen. The leaves of the coffee plant are dark green and glossy which has a spear shape. The leaves cannot be eaten. Coffee beans undergo several processes before they become roasted coffee. Coffee beans have traditionally been selectively picked by hand.After picking, the berries are processed in two methods – dry process method and wet process method. The other method, dry process, is also known as unwashed or natural method and it is the oldest method of processing coffee. After picking, the entire berries are placed on tables or in thin layer on patios in the sunny day to dry. The berries are dried to remove moisture present in it. The berries take ten days to dry completely. The berries need to be rotated regularly to prevent mildew while they dry. After the berries dry, the skin, pulp and parchment are removed from the bean. Then they are sorted and graded.The wet process is another processing method. This method is common among premium coffees. After picking green berries, they are sorted by immersion in water. The bad ones will float while the good ones will sink. The skin of the berry is removed by pressing the berries inside the water. Formation is used if machine is not used. The objective of the fermentation process is to dissolve any remaining fruit flesh and to remove the sticky film surrounding the coffee beans, which are not water soluble. The berries are fermented for twenty to forty-six hours during which the pulp will naturally fall off.The pulp is removed by breaking down the cellulose by fermenting the beans with microbes and then washing them with large amount of water . The berries without pulp are cleaned with water and then dried in a machine or the sun. In most cases they are dried in the sun to twelve to thirteen percent moisture content and bought down to ten percent by machine. Some coffee is dried on large raised tables where the coffee is turned by hand. This method increases cost. But, drying coffee this way has the advantage of allowing air to circulate better around the berries, helping to dry them more.After drying, the thin shell around the berries, called the parchment, is removed from the bean and green coffee bean is produced. The coffee berries have now been processed and are prepared to undergo roasting. Coffee is usually sold in a roasted state. The roasting process is a complex process because the beans should be roasted evenly and at a very high temperature. The actual roasting begins when the temperature inside the beans reaches two hundred degree Celsius. The roasting of the berries depends on the moisture and the density o f the beans. During roasting, caramelization occurs as an intense heat breaks down the pulp.Caramelization is the browning of sugars; a process used extensively in cooking to create nutty flavor and brown color. Sucrose is rapidly lost during the roasting process and may disappear altogether. The aromatic oils and acids weaken, which changes the flavor. Oils start to develop. At two hundred degree Celsius, oil called caffeol is created. This oil is responsible for coffee’s aroma and flavor. Depending on the color of the roasted beans as observed by human eye, they will be labeled as light, medium light, medium, medium dark, dark or very dark.Discerning the degree of roast involves measuring the reflected the light from the roasted beans. Different roasts create different flavors. Drinking decaffeinated coffee is better than drinking caffeinated coffee. Decaffeinated coffee has ninety seven percent of the caffeine removed. Decaffeinated coffee increases resting metabolism rate and protects against diabetes.It decreases C-peptide levels, which are an indicator of insulin resistance. It also avoids rapid heart rate, upset stomach and sleep disturbance. There are different types of coffee beverages, such as Affogato, Baltimore, Black eye, Black tie and many others. The main types of coffee that are produced are coffee and Espresso. They are the same, but Espresso is roasted a bit darker and produces stronger drink than ground coffee. The beans are roasted until they are dark and oily-looking. The main differences between coffee and espresso are the fineness of the grind and the brewing time.T he brewing time for espresso is much shorter and is made in an espresso machines that generate up to fifteen atmospheres of pressure to force hot water through the ground coffee. When the espresso is placed into a small basket; it is tightly packed with about 40lbs of pressure. Coffee is loose grinds deposited in to a basket and not packed at all. When the espresso liquid comes out, it is dark brown in color and slightly thick with a small amount of foam on top. The purpose of drinking coffee is to enjoy the flavor and the taste. Most of the people don’t drink coffee just to stay alert or awake.Most of the people end up buying decaffeinated coffee, to enjoy the coffee and to avoid all the side effect of caffeinated coffee. But some people think that drinking coffee is beneficial because some research has shown that it helps to sure diseases. I think that drinking coffee was one of the best experiences that have ever happened because of its taste and its strong smell. Many people feel this way. Coffee has also helped countries to improve their economies. If people think that it is harmful to drink caffeinated coffee then they can drink decaffeinated coffee and enjoy the same taste. Discuss the importance of LOYALTY in Millers Essay

Loyalty is one of the big themes in this play and most people are loyal to each other in the neighborhood, because there are quite a few illegal immigrants living there and working at the piers, so everyone trusts everyone else. This shows loyalty between this neighborhood because no one would snitch on anybody else. Because people understand that life is hard back home and they need the money to help their families, because perhaps there isn’t any work to earn the money they need, so they come to a better country hoping they have a better life there. Eddie and Beatrice are happily married, and live together in an apartment with Beatrice’s niece, Catherine. Beatrice as Eddie’s wife is very loyal and loves Eddie, he also loves Beatrice very much, but he is not as loyal to her as she is to him. I can see this on page 24, when Beatrice says to Eddie, â€Å"When am I gonna be a wife again, Eddie? † I think that Beatrice is insecure about how Eddie feels about her and their marriage. It seems that Eddie is paying more attention to Catherine then Beatrice, because he is worried that Rodolfo is taking Catherine for a ride, but he isn’t, Eddie is just getting worried over nothing, but Beatrice thinks that Eddie may think that she is just jealous, but she is just insecure about the way Eddie really feels about Catherine. Beatrice respects Eddie so much, I can see this because when Eddie is telling Beatrice that nobody will go to that wedding until Marco apologizes to him, on page 61 and Beatrice’s response to this was, â€Å"I cant Katie, I cant†¦ She says this because Eddie had already told her before that if she goes to that wedding then she as well not come back. So Beatrice obviously chose her husband and his wishes, rather than go to her nieces wedding. This proves that Beatrice is loyal and would do anything for Eddie. However, Eddie is not so faithful to Beatrice. Evidence of this is on page 47 when Eddie kisses Catherine on the mouth; I can see that she didn’t want Eddie to do that because the text says, ‘he reaches out suddenly, draws her to him, and as she strives to free herself, he kisses her on the mouth! Then suddenly Rodolfo pulls on Eddies arm and says, â€Å"Don’t! Stop that. Have respect for her. † Rodolfo obviously thinks that what Eddie is doing is wrong and he is trying to stop him. Like I mentioned before, Catherine lives in the same apartment as Eddie, and they get along really well, in fact a little to well. Catherine is a 17 year old young woman, she wants to prove to people that she isn’t a little girl anymore, but Eddie is having some trouble believing that. For example on page 5, Catherine comes in wearing her new skirt and shows it of to Eddie. He likes it but he doesn’t want other boys to see her wearing that and so he says to her, â€Å"you’re a baby, you don’t understand these things. † Eddie is saying that she can’t be going out wearing short skirts, high heels and ‘walking wavy’. He is only looking out for Catherine. Beatrice has also realized that Catherine is still acting like a little girl in front Eddie. Beatrice says to Catherine on page 30, â€Å"†¦ like you sit on the bathtub talkin’ to him when he’s shaving, in his underwear. † Beatrice is trying to explain to Catherine that she can’t still be doing that, because Beatrice knows that Catherine is trying to show everyone that she is independent, but Catherine doesn’t seem to understand because Beatrice says to her again on page 30, â€Å"but if you act like a baby, then he be treain’ you like a baby. Like when he comes home sometimes you throw yourself at him like when you was 12 years old! † This shows that Beatrice is really trying to tell Catherine that she has to stop acting like that in front of Eddie, because she isn’t 12 years old anymore, she is nearly 18 years old. This links in quite well with the meaning of this play because; Catherine wants Eddie to have enough faith in her, to let her go to do whatever she wants. Another character who is part of this is, Rodolfo. He and his brother, Marco, are illegal immigrants from Italy. They are Beatrice’s cousins and who have come over to America to work and earn some money to send back home, for their poor families. From the first time Rodolfo met Catherine he really liked her, and as Catherine got to know Rodolfo, she began to like him, a lot. Eddie soon realizes that there is something going on between Catherine and Rodolfo, because they are going out a lot together and coming home late. Eddie feels jealousy towards Rodolfo because he feels like Catherine is never at home anymore and she is always out with Rodolfo. Eddie is obviously jealous of Rodolfo, and he doesn’t really like him as much as he did, this is because Eddie thinks that all Rodolfo wants is his papers so he could stay in America and become an American citizen. This is not true at all, Rodolfo and Catherine are in love and that is why they want to get married. When Eddie found this out he really didn’t know what to do, but he did know that he wasn’t going to attend their wedding! This made Catherine really upset and she felt as thought she had lost her faith in Eddie, because he can’t be happy for her; whoever she would be with. This brings me to a different character in the play, someone who is very trustworthy and loyal. Alfieri is a lawyer and so he knows everyone in the neighborhood and their problems. Everyone always comes to Alfieri because he is a very honest and fair man, who people respect. From the first moment Eddie started to feel ‘bad’ about the whole Catherine and Rodolfo situation, he straight away turned to Alfieri, because Eddie knew he could tell Alfieri anything; even if it’s nothing to do with the law. When Eddie is talking to Alfieri on page 31, Eddie had explained the whole situation to Alfieri asked Eddie if there is a question of law somewhere and he also added, â€Å"Because there is nothing illegal about a girl falling in love with an immigrant. † But Eddie is convinced that all Rodolfo wants is his papers, Alfieri said to Eddie that he doesn’t know that but Eddie is determined for Catherine not to be with Rodolfo. As the conversation draws to an end, Alfieri says to Eddie on page 34, â€Å"†¦ let her go. That’s my advice. You did your job, now it’s her life. † Alfieri is trying to help Eddie saying that there is nothing he can do just wish her luck and let her go. Eddie thanks Alfieri; this shows trust between Eddie and Alfieri because even though Eddie doesn’t like Alfieri’s advice, he still tells him he won’t do anything, because there is nothing he can do. But later on Eddie betrays Alfieri’s trust and he calls the immigration bureau. On page 50 he says, â€Å"I want to report something. Illegal immigrants. Two of them. That’s right. † He also tells them the address and that he is just around the neighborhood. But when they start to question him further, he hangs up. There is also a lot of trust between the neighborhood and people seem to get along quite well. But when Eddie found out that there are two more illegal immigrants living upstairs with Marco and Rodolfo, who are Lipari the butchers nephews, he realizes that he just snitched on them as well as Marco and Rodolfo. Now he is scared because Lipari the butcher’s families are very hot headed and he will be in trouble when Lipari finds out Eddie snitched on them. So when the immigration officers show up on Eddie’s door Beatrice is shocked because she realizes what Eddie had done and she is ashamed with Eddie, because she never thought he would actually do that. The immigration officers start to search the apartment, they found no one, and so they run upstairs. Soon they come back down with Marco, Rodolfo and the two strange immigrants; Catherine follows down, suddenly Marco breaks from the group and dashes into the room and faces Eddie, Marco spits in Eddies face and shouts, â€Å"that one! I accuse that one! † Marco wants the whole neighborhood to know that Eddie was the man who snitched them up and Eddie was the man who snitched them up and Eddie tries to explain himself on page 58 but Lipari turns away with his arm around his wife, and they walk away, Eddie shouts â€Å"for Christ’s sake! I kept them, I gave them the blankets off my bed! † by saying this he is still trying to explain himself to everyone, but they just turn away and walk off, even his close friends, Louis and Mike. Eddie now learns how important trust is and he also realizes that the neighborhood has lost their trust and loyalty in him. In conclusion I have found out that in this play there is a lot of trust and loyalty between; Catherine and Eddie and Rodolfo, Beatrice and Eddie, and Alfieri and Eddie, but in the end there is not so much trust between Eddie and the neighborhood, more like betrayal. In that neighborhood there are quite a few immigrants working on the piers, but people keep it to themselves, because no one wants to snitch. This proves there is trust between everyone in the neighborhood. I think that Miller’s point of this play was to, actually make people realize that life isn’t just all happy endings but there are some issues which need to be talked about, like trust and loyalty in a illegal immigrant environment. Especially not in a narrow stylistic sense, but in the sense that it explores the relation between consciousness and its material ground. What is perhaps important is that the goal of a critical, dynamic and a realistic movie remains that it spins and kick starts the think ing mind to connect webs that pull consciousness and the social being closer together. Magnolia-released in 1999, and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, is a movie that beautifully narrates about all the things important to us. Two parallel stories are in motion that dramatizes men about to die; who in spite being different are both estranged from a grown child and their attempts at making contact with their children seems to fail miserably. What remains consistent throughout this movie is the choice in its three forms-the present, the past and the future, made by different age groups and how we come to either succumb to one over the other, or sometimes completely negate logic and take a different route. Earl Partridge's son is charismatic, Jimmy Gator's daughter on the other hand is a on drugs. The story progresses with a nurse's intervention in Earl's life who helps him in reaching out to his son. In an almost similar fashion through outside interception an upright officer meets Jimmy's daughter, bringing more calm and piece in her life. In all these variations and r ole reversals, Earl's young wife, with two whiz kids-one grown and battling with life, the other wonderfully young and pressured are shown to be coming to term with their own ghosts and problems, in various permutations and combinations. Another common component that sustains itself, throughout in the characters, is the emptiness that gnaws at them. We also find in the same breath a common thread in the two distinct characters-that of regret. The thought that drives the movie is real and critical to each frame, the way the movie takes shape because it talks about what most of us have to face up to everyday. It doesn't seem like an alien concept, which one cannot relate to. What it does achieve is, connect. An awesome plot where two lives, share the same transitions and the same conflicts. It is reminiscent of how things usually take shape, for people depending on the choices they make in life-completely real in all its reel magic. Although many lives seem to be woven into the movie, they seem like voices from the field of life.
